Born in Sudbury, Michel Kendel had learned piano, clarinet and guitar by the age of 14, achieving a Grade 8 level in classical piano studies at Toronto's Royal Conservatory of Music.

Prior to joining CANO Michel performed solo in clubs and bars, and with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
